Music is an Art…

Founded in 2007 by Jacob Szekely and Robert Anderson SPLA was the first school in America dedicated to creative string playing. We strove to offer an innovative and inspiring experience that connected students with their passion for all music and encouraged them to create and perform styles of music that they really, really enjoyed playing.

Today, SPLA continues to operate as a non profit and as though the annual Los Angeles Creative String Festival (now in it's 9th year)

Now Operating as a not for profit, we create year round events that continues our goal of establishing Los Angeles as a global center for the creative string world.

Robert Anderson


As co-founder of String Project Los Angeles, Robert enjoys teaching the art of improvisation and encouraging musical creativity in young string players.

Jacob Szekely


As co-founder and music director of String Project LA, Jacob discovered Jazz when he was accepted to study classical cello performance at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy, and thereafter began leading a musical double life.

Andrea Whitt


Andrea completed her Master’s degree in viola performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) under the instruction of Masao Kawasaki and Catharine Carroll.

Luis Mascaro


Luis was one of the few selected musicians to perform live at the 50th Grammy Awards with the Foo Fighters and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin).

Thomas Lea


Mr. Lea has been a member and performed with such orchestras as the New World Symphony, Dakah Hiphop Orchestra, and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

John Crooks


John Crooks compositions expand the range of forms available to improvisers through use of novel computer-based frameworks.
